We're on a Mission to Preserve the Stories of the Biafra War
By gathering and archiving the personal stories, photographs, and artifacts from the Nigeria-Biafra Civil War, Akụkọ Biafra aims to make these histories accessible online.
Learning about the Nigeria-Biafra War today is challenging. Official records are scarce, and many personal stories remain untold. Want to hear an account from someone who lived through it? You’d likely have to track down survivors or their families or sift through limited archives in libraries.
And with the generation that experienced the war quickly aging, the window to capture these stories is closing fast. Someone who was 18 years old at the start of the war will be over 75 by 2025.
But these stories deserve to be heard. That’s where Akụkọ Biafra comes in. “The project doesn’t just tell the story of a war—it gives voice to those who lived it, highlights its global impact, creating a permanent archive for future generations.”
We’re gathering these stories—personal letters, photographs, oral histories, and more—so you can easily explore them online, anywhere in the world.
Accessing our archive will be simple. Want to hear a survivor’s story or see documents from the war? Search by name, location, or event, and instantly discover a wealth of information.
Our goal is to preserve as many stories and artifacts as possible so that this crucial part of world history is never forgotten. We’ve already begun digitizing a growing collection, and with your support, we’ll continue building this archive into a comprehensive resource for scholars, educators, and everyday people alike.
We need you!
Akụkọ Biafra is a community-driven project, and we can't do it alone. Whether you have personal stories, photos, letters, or other artifacts related to the Nigeria-Biafra War, your contributions are vital. You can share your family's history, volunteer to collect stories or help digitize and catalog existing materials in the collection. Or simply spread the word to those who might have stories to share. Together, we can ensure that these voices are never lost.
